I have learned that the best discussions happen when we ask our teens to dig deeper than “What did you think of this book?”  These prompts are designed to push past those quick, surface answers and get your student really thinking about who they are as readers and writers.  Perfect for AP English, Honors classes, or just thoughtful homeschool families who want their kids engaging with literature on a deeper level.  Each question asks for a solid paragraph response, which gives them practice developing their own voice while working through complex ideas.

I have organized everything into eight different areas—things like how they see themselves as learners, how they think about right and wrong in the books they read, and what kind of writer they are becoming.  The questions aren’t just about reflection, either.  They are asking kids to back up their thoughts, challenge their own assumptions, and really examine why they think what they think.  From wrestling with tough moral questions in literature to spotting when an author might be pushing a particular viewpoint, these prompts help our teens approach English with the kind of mature, critical thinking they’ll need in college and beyond.

The beauty of this resource is how flexible it is.  Use them as daily journal starters, jumping-off points for essays, family discussion topics over dinner, or even as portfolio pieces your student can look back on throughout the year.  Pick and choose the categories that fit what you are studying, or dive into the whole set during those first few weeks when you are figuring out where your student’s head and heart are at.  They work just as well typed up on the computer or written out by hand—whatever works best for your family’s style.
