The Beacon Series: Substance Prevention & Life Skills Guide — Homeschool Edition

12 Courses • 48 Parent-Guided Lessons

Your teen will eventually face decisions you can’t make for them. The goal of The Beacon Series is to help prepare them before those moments arrive.

The Beacon Series: Homeschool Edition is a comprehensive, parent-guided substance prevention and life skills curriculum for middle and high school teens. It was created to help families have honest, meaningful conversations about the real-world situations young people encounter as they grow in independence—from vaping, alcohol, marijuana, counterfeit pills, and fentanyl to peer pressure, stress, social media, difficult emotions, helping a friend, and personal safety.

Rather than relying on fear, shame, exaggerated consequences, or scare tactics, The Beacon Series gives teens accurate information, practical life skills, and opportunities to think through decisions before they are standing in the middle of them.

Because knowing what to avoid is only part of prevention.

Teens also need to know how to handle pressure, recognize risk, manage difficult emotions, think through consequences, help a friend, make safer decisions, and ask for help when something doesn’t feel right.

What Is Included?

Your purchase provides access to the complete 12-course, 48-lesson digital curriculum through the secure MyHelpr online learning portal.

The 12 courses explore:

Course 1 — Foundations: How Drugs Actually Work
Help your teen understand the developing brain, dopamine, reward, habits, decision-making, and why substances can affect teens differently.

Course 2 — Nicotine & Vaping: The Addiction Nobody Warned You About
Explore vaping, nicotine addiction, dependence, mood, anxiety, focus, health, and the realities often hidden behind vaping culture.

Course 3 — Marijuana & Edibles: The Motivation Myth
Examine marijuana normalization, THC potency, edibles, memory, motivation, anxiety, and why “legal” or common doesn’t necessarily mean risk-free for teens.

Course 4 — Alcohol: What Teens Aren’t Told
Go beyond basic warnings to explore alcohol’s effects on judgment, memory, blackouts, risk-taking, mixing substances, and the illusion of control.

Course 5 — Pills, Fentanyl & Fake Meds: Why One Pill Can Be Deadly
Help teens understand counterfeit pills, fentanyl, prescription medication risks, and why the appearance of a pill doesn’t guarantee what’s actually inside it.

Course 6 — Party Culture, Peer Pressure & “Everyone Else Is Doing It”
Teach teens to recognize subtle forms of pressure, think ahead about risky environments, establish boundaries, and develop practical ways to exit uncomfortable situations.

Course 7 — Helping a Friend Without Ruining the Friendship
Explore loyalty, secrecy, warning signs, difficult conversations, and when involving a trusted adult may be the safest and most caring choice.

Course 8 — Stress, Emotions & Healthy Coping Without Substances
Help teens understand stress, emotional overload, escaping versus coping, healthy coping strategies, and when to reach out for additional support.

Course 9 — Curiosity, Boredom & the “Adventure” Myth
Address curiosity and boredom honestly while helping teens understand reward-seeking, risk, consequences, and healthier ways to pursue excitement and adventure.

Course 10 — Social Media, Influence & Normalization
Explore algorithms, repeated exposure, comparison, influencers, hidden persuasion, social normalization, and practical digital boundaries.

Course 11 — Shame, Mistakes & Starting Over
Help teens distinguish guilt from shame, understand why hiding mistakes can make problems worse, and learn that asking for help and starting over are strengths.

Course 12 — Crisis Awareness, Safety & Life-Saving Decisions
Prepare teens to recognize serious situations, respond appropriately to substance-related and other emergencies, speak up when someone may be unsafe, and understand the importance of getting help quickly.

Together, these courses give teens a broader set of real-life decision-making and prevention skills they can carry with them as they move toward adulthood. The curriculum’s 12-course structure and topics are also summarized in the customer access guide.

How Do Homeschool Families Use The Beacon Series?

The Beacon Series was designed to be parent-guided, but you don’t need specialized training or expertise in substance prevention to teach it.

Each course contains four lessons, for a total of 48 lessons. A lesson takes approximately 45 minutes, although families can adjust the pace depending on discussion and the needs of their teen.

Parents can work through the curriculum from beginning to end as a complete course or incorporate individual courses into their homeschool schedule as appropriate.

The lessons are designed to encourage conversation rather than lectures. Facilitator discussion prompts give you opportunities to pause, talk through situations, hear what your teen thinks, challenge misconceptions, and help your teen apply what they’re learning to real life.

Most importantly, you aren’t expected to have every answer.

Your role is to create an environment where your teen can learn, think critically, ask questions, reflect, and practice making decisions before real-world pressure enters the picture.

Once purchased, families receive instructions for creating their account and accessing all 12 courses and 48 lessons through the secure MyHelpr online learning portal. The included access guide also explains that families can work through the material at a pace that fits their homeschool.

Designed With High School Credit in Mind

The complete curriculum provides approximately 36 hours of direct instructional material through 48 lessons averaging about 45 minutes each.

When families incorporate the provided facilitator discussion prompts, parent-teen conversations, additional discussion, and personal reflection time, the curriculum can be expanded to approximately 60 total hours of coursework.

This makes The Beacon Series suitable for families who choose to award 0.5 high school credit in areas such as:

  • Health
  • Life Skills
  • General Electives

Credit designation and requirements can vary, so homeschool families should follow the requirements applicable to their state, homeschool program, umbrella school, or other governing organization.

Built-in digital progress tracking within the MyHelpr dashboard also helps families document lesson and course completion.

Why Teach This Before There Is a Problem?

Many conversations about substances and risky behavior happen after something has already gone wrong.

The Beacon Series takes a different approach.

Prevention gives teens an opportunity to understand situations before they encounter them. They can think through peer pressure before they’re at the party. Learn about counterfeit pills before someone offers them one. Understand how stress can influence decisions before they’re overwhelmed. Practice asking for help before they’re frightened or unsure what to do.

That’s why the curriculum isn’t centered only on telling teens “don’t do drugs.”

It’s about helping them develop the ability to stop, think, recognize what’s happening, evaluate risk, consider consequences, and make a safer decision—even when a parent isn’t standing beside them.

A Calm, Honest Approach to Difficult Topics

These conversations matter, but they don’t have to be frightening.

The Beacon Series intentionally approaches prevention through understanding, preparation, critical thinking, practical skills, and trust rather than frightening teens into making good choices.

The goal isn’t to make teens afraid of the world.

It’s to help them become better prepared for it.

By the end of The Beacon Series, your teen will have explored not only the realities of today’s substances, but also the life skills surrounding them: managing pressure, understanding influence, coping with stress, evaluating risk, helping friends, recovering from mistakes, recognizing emergencies, communicating with trusted adults, and knowing when to seek help.

Give your teen more than information. Give them tools they can use when real life happens.

Because the best time to prepare your teen for these situations is before they’re facing them.
