The Long Fuse: A World War I Primary Source DBQ Essay (Grades 9-12)

Description

The Long Fuse gives students the real paper trail from the sinking of the Lusitania to America’s declaration of war on Germany: a diplomatic warning, a president’s most quoted speech, a resignation letter, a broken pledge, a decoded telegram, and the war resolution itself. Every excerpt comes from an actual archive, the Department of State’s published Foreign Relations series, the Library of Congress, the National Archive. Students don’t read about this two-year argument, but rather they read the actual words and situation themselves inside of it.

Each document comes with a four-question sourcing framework before students ever get to content questions: who wrote it and from what position, when and in response to what, why, and what it leaves out on purpose. They will have to truly evaluate to see things like a recruiting poster that never names Germany, a telegram whose “the President” isn’t who students assume, a pledge with two conditions buried in one sentence. Each document rewards close reading over surface reading, and the questions are built to catch a student who skims.

The twelve documents build toward a full synthesis essay: at least eight documents as evidence, grouped by theme rather than marched through in order, and a thesis that has to take a real position on whether the Lusitania was a cause, a catalyst, or both. Sample thesis frames are included as starting points, not fill-in-the-blanks, to help students pressure-test their own claim before they draft.
