Description

What if the most important history skill isn’t memorizing what happened, but learning to catch what an official report leaves out?

Evidence in the Water puts students inside the real 1915 Board of Trade inquiry into the sinking of the Lusitania, not as bystanders reading about it, but as a junior investigator building a private file.

Every figure, every document, and every historical debate in this room is drawn from the real record, including the war diary of the U-20’s commander and the conspiracy theory that has followed this ship for over a century. Students will learn to hold two things at once: they will be able to name a documented institutional failure plainly, and refuse to believe a plot the evidence doesn’t support which is an important skill in both historic research and modern news literacy.

The five verbs behind the puzzles, decode, reconstruct, eliminate, corroborate, audit, are a historian’s toolkit. Each Evidence section ends in writing, not just a code: a one-sentence hypothesis, a judgment call on how much blame a party actually deserves, a closing argument built from the student’s own evidence file because they’re building a case they’ll have to defend on paper by the end.

What’s Included

  • Five full evidence files with student tasks and puzzle mechanics
  • A complete Junior Investigator’s Case File for students to work through
  • Full facilitator guide with timing, prep instructions, and discussion prompts
  • Complete answer key with historical nuance notes for every evidence file
  • A self-check code card for independent or solo play
  • A three-tier Differentiation Guide covering grades 3-5, 6-9, and 9-12
  • A “Going Further” comparative extension for older students
  • Bibliography of primary and scholarly sources

Built for the Whole Range

Younger students (grades 3-5) get a gentler 45-minute version with the hardest reasoning steps simplified. The core experience (grades 6-9) runs all five evidence files as written, roughly 75 to 120 minutes. Older students (grades 9-12) add primary source excerpts, formal vocabulary, and independent research, so one purchase covers a co-op with mixed ages or a family working through it over several years.

Print and play, no locks required. Everything a facilitator needs is included, whether you’re running it with a full classroom or handing it to one curious kid at the kitchen table.
