Sound & Surprise Challenge: A Hands-On STEM Engineering Activity

Add excitement and creativity to your STEM lessons with the Sound & Surprise Challenge! In this engaging engineering activity, students explore how sound and vibrations can be used to trigger motion and create surprising chain reactions. Using simple classroom or household materials, students design and build a small system where an action produces a sound that signals or activates the next step in a sequence.

As they experiment with objects that ring, tap, clink, and vibrate, students discover how sound is created through vibration and how energy can transfer between objects. Through testing and improving their designs, students naturally engage in the engineering design process to plan, build, test, and improve while developing problem-solving and creative thinking skills.
