Sound and the Behavior of Mechanical Waves: Science Unit 6, Grade 8 (Letters & Devotion)

Description

Sound and the Behavior of Mechanical Waves is Unit 6 of Physical Science: Matter, Energy, and Interactions (Grade 8), the Letters & Devotion Science course, complete in one printable PDF: 8 lessons, the unit check-up and the answer key, 50 pages.

• Wavelength and amplitude as distinct measured features of a wave diagram
• The frequency formula applied to counted wave cycles over a measured time interval
• The causal mechanism by which sound requires a medium of particles to compress and rarefy
• The independence of pitch (mapped to frequency) and loudness (mapped to amplitude) as separate wave properties
• Timbre as the additional wave complexity (overlapping frequencies) beyond the fundamental frequency and amplitude
• Resonance as a match between a driving frequency and an object’s natural frequency
• An original experimental design isolating frequency as a variable independent of medium, for unfamiliar sound sources
• The sequence of wave emission, reflection, and detection described in a technical text about sonar/ultrasound

Every lesson is written for a parent with no teaching background: it opens with a short script to read aloud, names the specific wrong idea a student is likely to reach for and how to correct it, and closes with a practice sheet you may copy for your household. Scripture references are King James Version throughout. Black-and-white, 8.5 x 11 in. The whole year of this course is also in this store as a single book.
