The Chemistry of Life: Science Unit 1, Grade 9 (Letters & Devotion)

Description

The Chemistry of Life is Unit 1 of Biology: Systems, Structure, and Change (Grade 9), the Letters & Devotion Science course, complete in one printable PDF: 9 lessons, the unit check-up and the answer key, 84 pages.

• Water’s polarity and hydrogen bonding, arising from unequal electron sharing at oxygen
• Monomer identity and functional groups distinguishing the four macromolecule classes
• Dehydration synthesis and hydrolysis as the shared mechanism linking all four macromolecule classes
• Levels of protein structure and how sequence determines folded 3-D shape
• Macromolecule class names, monomer names, and functional roles
• Enzymes as catalysts that lower activation energy via substrate-specific shape complementarity
• The relationship between temperature/pH-induced denaturation and loss of enzyme activity
• The disproportionate functional consequence of a single amino-acid substitution on protein shape and function
• Domain-specific vocabulary in a biochemistry text versus everyday usage of the same words

Every lesson is written for a parent with no teaching background: it opens with a short script to read aloud, names the specific wrong idea a student is likely to reach for and how to correct it, and closes with a practice sheet you may copy for your household. Scripture references are King James Version throughout. Black-and-white, 8.5 x 11 in. The whole year of this course is also in this store as a single book.
