Evolution by Natural Selection: Science Unit 6, Grade 9 (Letters & Devotion)

Description

Evolution by Natural Selection is Unit 6 of Biology: Systems, Structure, and Change (Grade 9), the Letters & Devotion Science course, complete in one printable PDF: 8 lessons, the unit check-up and the answer key, 77 pages.

• The timing of heritable variation relative to a selection pressure
• The distinction between allele-frequency change and allele creation
• The structural criterion distinguishing homology from analogy
• Convergent multi-line evidence for evolutionary relationship (fossil, anatomical, molecular)
• The discrimination between natural selection and genetic drift as explanations for allele frequency change
• Criteria for a species boundary (reproductive isolation) and sufficiency of evidence for speciation claims
• The definitions of genetic drift, bottleneck effect, and founder effect
• Argument construction ruling out a named alternative mechanism using dataset-specific evidence

Every lesson is written for a parent with no teaching background: it opens with a short script to read aloud, names the specific wrong idea a student is likely to reach for and how to correct it, and closes with a practice sheet you may copy for your household. Scripture references are King James Version throughout. Black-and-white, 8.5 x 11 in. The whole year of this course is also in this store as a single book.
