Inspire your learners to write and come up with their own ideas – all on their own!

Inspiring young kids to write can be a challenge! Putting a pencil to paper and forming letters is enough of a challenge for most of them – adding ideas to those letters, too, is asking for a LOT! We are expected to have them writing something by the end of kindergarten, but HOW do we get them to WANT to write? To become kids who actually LOVE to write? We inspire them to find their writer’s voice!

These simple and inviting writing prompt pages will inspire your writers to come up with their own ideas with just a little prompting. Every page has a drawing prompt and correlated writing prompt with just a few lines. Kids will first draw what they have in mind in their imaginations – THEN they can concentrate on writing the words by looking back at their drawings!

Plus, these pages are major ink savers!

Included in this unit:

  • 50 Draw & Write Prompts – just print and go

Here is one idea of how you can implement this:

  • Project or show students the page(s) you’d like them to work on. Alternatively, you could let them choose the page they would like, but use one as an example.
  • Tell students what their prompts say and model drawing a response in the picture frame on the page. Show how you are thinking about a story, then draw everything on your paper.
  • The next day, have students write their stories. Model referring back to your drawing, then write what is happening. For older children, this could be done on the same day.
  • If kids are still struggling, you can help them by writing some words on the board or hanging some verbs and adjectives (with pictures) on a word wall for them to use.
