Description

This Ethics & Economics in Environmental Decision-Making lesson bundle helps students explore how scientific knowledge, economic priorities, and ethical values intersect when real environmental decisions are made. Rather than presenting environmental issues as simple right-or-wrong scenarios, this week-long unit challenges students to evaluate trade-offs, weigh evidence, and consider multiple perspectives.

Students examine how economic incentives, technological development, and ethical beliefs influence decisions related to municipal development, food production, deforestation, mining, energy use, and resource management. Through guided analysis, discussion, and case-based activities, students learn to assess costs and benefits, analyze consequences, and defend positions using evidence.

This instructional approach reflects the same philosophy found in my book, The Price of Illiteracy: Why Science Ignorance Threatens Our Future, which emphasizes scientific literacy, ethical reasoning, and helping students learn how to evaluate complex issues rather than memorize simplified answers. That perspective is embedded throughout this bundle, encouraging thoughtful, informed decision-making.

Designed for middle and high school environmental science courses, this resource works as a standalone week-long unit or as a strong complement to a semester-long environmental science curriculum.

Key learning goals:
Evaluate cost-benefit trade-offs of commercial activities such as municipal development, food production, deforestation, over-harvesting, mining, and the use of renewable and non-renewable energy sources
Analyze the economic impacts of individual actions including overbuilding, habitat destruction, poaching, and improper waste disposal
Examine how ethical beliefs influence environmental science and engineering practices such as food production, water distribution, energy generation, and mineral extraction
Discuss the impact of research and technology on social ethics and legal practices, including building design, recycling systems, and emission standards
Use evidence to argue whether a healthy economy and a healthy environment can coexist

What’s included:
Handouts
PowerPoint presentation
Student workbook featuring think-pair-share activities, making inferences tasks, PEEL short-answer prompts, and vocabulary choice boards

This bundle is part of a larger collection of environmental science and cross-disciplinary curriculum resources. Full units, semester bundles, and year-long programs are available across environmental science, biology, anatomy, forensic science, health, and many other subjects, allowing teachers to maintain consistent instructional quality across their courses.
