This French writing unit is the first part in a multi-week series that takes students who have never written a sentence in French before to writing sentences in 2 weeks!

Using simple grammar rules, sight words, and eventually simple verbs, it’s a great way to kick start French composition in a non-intimidating and simple way. And no, it won’t take up all of your time! 2-week units are meant to be used 4 days per week.

How these units work:

Every unit covers a basic rule of writing in French. For example, the first unit teaches students that nouns are either masculine or feminine and change the articles and adjectives used to describe them. Along with this, every 2 weeks there is a new words list, giving students plenty of time to learn the new words and the new rule. A daily worksheet is given along with daily dictations and a weekly quiz.

As the units and weeks progress, students will go from writing simple sentences using only sight words, adjectives and prepositions to learning about beginner-level verb conjugation. After completing all of the units, students will be ready to delve into the deeper concepts of verbs and write longer paragraphs and papers.

What grades are these units for?

Before beginning a unit, students must be familiar with the basics of grammar in English (what a noun is, what an article is, etc). I don’t recommend starting these units before third grade.

What if I don’t know French well?

Don’t worry! I’ve included a link to a pronunciation website and all lessons are written in English. It’s a great unit for homeschooling or small classes alike!

What’s Included in the 2-week units?

  • A word list with explanations for teachers and/or parents/tutors
  • A word list or flashcards for students
  • A rule poster to display
  • Student-sized rule cards for notebooks
  • Sample lesson plans (8 days of lessons)
  • Daily worksheets (8 days of worksheets)
