Scaled Picture Graphs and Bar Graphs: Math Unit 8, Grade 3 (Letters & Devotion)

Description

Scaled Picture Graphs and Bar Graphs is Unit 8 of Number, Shape, and Pattern: Grade 3 Mathematics (Grade 3), the Letters & Devotion Math course, complete in one printable PDF: 8 lessons, the unit check-up and the answer key, 45 pages.

• The multiplication relationship between symbol count and total quantity on a scaled picture graph
• The multiplication relationship between bar length in grid units and total quantity on a scaled bar graph
• The two-step procedure of multiplying each bar or symbol group by the scale before subtracting to compare quantities
• The idea that scale is a stand-in for equal groups, so raw bar length or symbol count is meaningless without it
• The construction of a scaled bar graph, including axis labels, scale key, and correctly proportioned bars
• The invariance of underlying quantities across different visual scale choices for the same data
• The use of rounding to the nearest ten (from Unit 3 place value) as a check on a multiplication-derived graph total
• The terms scale, key, and axis as applied to picture and bar graphs

Every lesson is written for a parent with no teaching background: it opens with a short script to read aloud, names the specific wrong idea a student is likely to reach for and how to correct it, and closes with a practice sheet you may copy for your household. Scripture references are King James Version throughout. Black-and-white, 8.5 x 11 in. The whole year of this course is also in this store as a single book.
