Description

What happens when online cruelty follows children into a world where every threat suddenly feels real?

The Mauled Mage Read-Aloud Living Book Edition transforms an imaginative cyber-adventure into a thoughtful, story-first learning experience for children aged approximately 9–12, homeschool families, parents, librarians, and educators.

When Beam discovers signs that his classmate Lee may be the target of cyberbullying, curiosity quickly becomes concern. Lee has been suffering in silence, targeted by a hidden player inside an online game. Determined to uncover the truth, Beam and Lee use a homemade portal to enter an unrestricted virtual world where internet systems become strange landscapes, hidden identities become dangerous adversaries, and online cruelty takes on frighteningly real consequences.

Alongside Bindi, Maddy, and Jack, they are drawn deeper into a fantasy-shaped metaverse filled with tunnels, magical transformations, hostile creatures, manipulative crowds, and a mysterious mage. What begins as an attempt to expose a bully gradually becomes a much larger exploration of fear, trust, friendship, bystander behavior, courage, accountability, and repair.

Story First. Discussion Second.

This edition is designed around a Charlotte Mason-friendly Living Books approach. Rather than beginning with rules, warnings, or worksheets about cyberbullying, children first encounter the issue through memorable characters, tension, consequences, and story.

The adult reads.
The child listens.
Then the learner is invited to narrate, wonder, discuss, create, and notice.

There is no pressure to extract a predetermined moral from every passage. Instead, children are encouraged to retell what happened in their own words, notice what matters to them, consider character choices, and gradually connect those ideas with situations they may encounter in everyday digital life.

Eight Carefully Selected Read-Aloud Experiences

The edition includes eight story-led experiences drawn from The Mauled Mage, each exploring a different dimension of the wider cyberbullying story:

Digging Deep — suspicion, noticing harm, and responsibility
Fixing Code — assumptions, respect, and hidden strengths
Cyberbully — silence, fear, trust, and asking for help
Cyber Tunnels — making the invisible systems of the internet imaginable
The Octopus — fear, courage, and accepting help
The Feast — group pressure, cruelty, and the danger of turning harm into entertainment
Lee Explains — betrayal, confession, trust, and responsibility
Sorting It Out — accountability, boundaries, change, and repair

Each passage can stand on its own, allowing families to work through the full sequence or simply choose the scenes most relevant to their child.

More Than a Story About “Being Nice Online”

The Mauled Mage does not reduce cyberbullying to a list of rules. It asks children to think about harder questions:

Why might someone stay silent when they are being hurt?
When does noticing another person’s harm become our responsibility?
How can group behavior make cruelty seem acceptable?
What is the difference between punishment and accountability?
Can trust return after someone has hidden something important?
What does genuine repair actually require?

The story also allows children to explore the roles of the person targeted, the bystander, the friend, the wider group, and the person responsible for harm. The final restorative scenes emphasize that understanding someone’s behavior does not excuse it, and that meaningful change involves responsibility, boundaries, support, and evidence of change.

Designed for Gentle, Flexible Learning

Each read-aloud is followed by simple opportunities to extend the story without overwhelming it. Depending on the learner, children may:

  • retell the passage aloud in their own words
  • draw or map a memorable scene
  • act out a short moment
  • write a brief narration
  • copy a meaningful sentence into a commonplace book
  • explore one substantial discussion question
  • notice a related situation in everyday life

A complete session can often take around 15 minutes, making the edition suitable for family read-aloud time, homeschool morning work, library sessions, small groups, or short digital citizenship lessons.

A Different Way to Talk About Cyberbullying

Instead of telling children what they should think, The Mauled Mage Read-Aloud Living Book Edition gives them something worth thinking about.

The fantasy adventure creates emotional distance from difficult real-world issues while still allowing children to recognize familiar experiences: exclusion, anonymous cruelty, peer pressure, fear of speaking up, loyalty, betrayal, and the difficult work of rebuilding trust.

The aim is not simply to teach children a cyber-safety rule. It is to help them develop digital judgment—the ability to notice harm, think carefully about choices, understand consequences, support others, and decide how they want to behave when digital life becomes complicated.

Ideal For

Homeschool families looking for meaningful literature-based learning; parents wanting to discuss cyberbullying without lecturing; educators exploring digital citizenship, wellbeing, empathy, or online behavior; librarians running read-aloud or discussion sessions; and children who learn best when important ideas arrive through story, imagination, and adventure.

Read the story. Narrate what mattered. Wonder about the choices. Notice what happens in real life.

The Mauled Mage Read-Aloud Living Book Edition helps young readers discover that standing against online cruelty is not only about knowing the rules—it is about courage, empathy, responsibility, and knowing when to act.

  • This is a colorful, comic-style “Meet Bindi and Beam” character introduction page for The Web Trap: 5-Day Mini Unit Pack. It combines character profiles with the unit’s themes of friendship, virtual reality, digital choices and healthier technology use. At the top, a large wooden sign reads “Meet Bindi and Beam,” with “The Web Trap – 5-Day Mini Unit Pack” underneath. Bindi and Beam stand beside the sign in a bright workshop filled with technology and glimpses of a fantasy virtual world. Bindi has long black hair in a single braid, green eyes, a white T-shirt and backpack. She reaches toward the reader and says, “Hi! I’m Bindi!” Beam has messy black hair, blue-green eyes, a white T-shirt and backpack. He gives a thumbs-up and says, “G’day! I’m Beam!” A glowing DreamWalker virtual-reality headset sits prominently in front of them. An introductory panel explains that Bindi, Beam and their friends Maddy, Jack and Lee explore the exciting and sometimes difficult worlds of virtual reality, online gaming and digital life. Their adventure encourages learners to think about safer, smarter and kinder choices both online and offline. Nearby handwritten messages emphasize curiosity, friendship and brighter choices. The middle of the page contains two large character profiles. Bindi Arora, age 11, is described as thoughtful, observant and cautious. She notices details others miss, cares deeply about her friends and helps guide the team through the DreamWalker experience. Her goals include being a supportive friend, asking good questions, helping others make wiser choices and staying connected to what is real. Her quote reads, “Real adventures happen together.” Beam Arora, also age 11, is creative, energetic and full of ideas. He enjoys building, tinkering and discovering how things work. He uses his technical skills to help the group enter the DreamWalker, solve problems and find a way to bring Maddy home. His goals include inventing, helping his friends, learning from mistakes and finding a healthier balance with technology. His quote reads, “Big ideas are better when you share them.” The lower section, titled “Their Friends,” introduces three more characters. Maddy is a curly blonde girl who loves trying new things and becomes Princess Aleela inside the DreamWalker. Her message emphasizes friendship and being there for one another both online and offline. Jack is a cheerful, curly-haired blond boy holding a soccer ball. He is sporty, friendly, humorous and loyal. Lee has short black hair, glasses and holds a tablet. He is clever, thoughtful and a strong problem-solver who brings a calm perspective to the team. The page ends with a bright coastal landscape surrounded by flowers and greenery. A central banner reads, “Explore • Reflect • Create • Make a Difference.” Wooden signs on the left say “Real Friends,” “Mindful Tech,” “Kinder Communities” and “Brighter Tomorrows.” On the right, a handwritten message says that a brighter tomorrow starts with the choices we make today. Overall, the page introduces the five young characters while connecting their personalities and roles directly to the 5-Day Mini Unit Pack’s central themes: friendship, thoughtful technology use, questioning digital experiences, reflection and making responsible choices. The Web Trap 5-Day Mini-Unit Pack
