Description
Most of us teach Veterans Day in a single sentence: the war ended at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
However, this lesson dives into the idea of who decided what that hour should mean, and did they all decide the same thing?
Three Voices, One Date puts real primary documents in front of your students and lets them do the work of a historian. They start by looking at the day itself, then read three leaders speaking about the same hour in different places and different years. Pride, Silence, and Honoring the dead are all key themes and students will have to not just identify but also explain why they matter.
Lesson Preview
- Warm up with primary sources from November 11, 1918, so they know what the day looked like before anyone decided how to remember it
- Read three primary source cards from the United States and the United Kingdom, spanning 1919 and 1954
- Ask the questions historians ask: Who is speaking? To whom? Why now? What is this day being asked to do?
- Compare how one date can carry more than one meaning
- Finish with a hands-on quiet-minute activity that turns the reading into something they experience
What is included
- Warm-up sources from the day itself
- Primary source cards, ready to print
- Questions and tasks in four grade bands, so everyone from ages 5 to 18 can work from the same sources
- A hands-on quiet-minute activity
- An answer key with model responses for every grade band
More about what to Expect
- No prep. Download, print, and teach.
- One lesson, every age. Siblings or a mixed co-op class can study the same documents together at their own level.
- Neutral and secular. The lesson does not tell students how to feel about war, holidays, or ceremonies. It teaches them to read carefully and decide for themselves.
- Built from real documents. Every source is a genuine primary document, not a retelling.
Use it for a morning basket, a co-op class, a history unit on World War I, or as part of your Veterans Day and Armistice Day plans.

Every EGP Media and Press resource is designed and written by me, Kara Carrero, a former college-prep high school teacher and now a home educator. I teach students to think for themselves before they reach for a tool, and I hold myself to the same standard. That means the thinking comes first: I concept every idea myself, then use AI as an editor and proofreader, to cross-check facts, and to refine illustrations I have already concepted. The ideas, the projects and games, the lessons, and the final designs and decisions are mine.
