READ, THINK & DO

Autism-Friendly Reading Activities K–5

Short Passages • Visual Vocabulary • Comprehension • Sequencing • Social Inference • Movement Breaks

Make reading comprehension more accessible, predictable, and engaging for autistic and neurodivergent learners with this comprehensive collection of 30 low-clutter reading activities for kindergarten through fifth grade.

Each activity follows the same reassuring routine: students read or listen to a short passage, explore three visual vocabulary words, answer five focused comprehension questions, and complete a brief movement break. This consistent structure reduces unnecessary cognitive demands while helping students build confidence, comprehension, and independence.

Passages gradually increase in length and complexity across the grade levels without overwhelming students. Topics include school, family, friendship, routines, nature, problem-solving, community experiences, emotional regulation, flexible thinking, self-advocacy, and social situations.

Each activity includes:

  • A short, age-appropriate reading passage
  • Three visual vocabulary words with student-friendly definitions
  • A quick-retell activity
  • Five reading-comprehension questions
  • “What happened?” and key-detail questions
  • Sequencing practice
  • Feelings and emotions questions
  • Social-inference and problem-solving questions
  • A passage-related movement break
  • Standing, seated, and small-movement alternatives
  • Flexible response options, including speaking, pointing, drawing, writing, typing, AAC, and scribing
  • A complete answer key with acceptable sample responses

The workbook contains five activities for each level:

  • Kindergarten
  • Grade 1
  • Grade 2
  • Grade 3
  • Grade 4
  • Grade 5

Also included are instructor guidance, suggestions for reducing visual and language demands, a simple progress-monitoring record, and support for children who use text-to-speech or adult read-aloud assistance.

Use these activities for:

  • Special education reading instruction
  • Autism support classrooms
  • Homeschool reading lessons
  • Reading intervention
  • Tutoring sessions
  • Speech and language support
  • Occupational therapy collaboration
  • Afterschool and enrichment programs
  • Morning work
  • Small-group instruction
  • Independent practice

Students are never required to make eye contact, read aloud publicly, remain completely still, or complete movements in one prescribed way. The activities respect different communication styles, sensory needs, processing speeds, and ways of demonstrating understanding.

Read, Think & Do helps children strengthen comprehension, sequencing, emotional understanding, social reasoning, vocabulary, and reading confidence—one manageable passage at a time.

Give your learners a predictable, flexible way to practice reading comprehension. Get your copy of Read, Think & Do and start using these ready-to-go activities in your instruction.
