Description

The Web Trap 5-Day Mini Unit Pack is a ready-to-use, story-based homeschool resource for learners aged approximately 9–12. Built around the illustrated novella The Web Trap – A Tech Obsession Fairytale, it uses the adventures of Bindi, Beam, Maddy and their friends to help young learners explore how exciting digital experiences can gradually become sources of escapism, distraction and social isolation.

Across five flexible lessons, learners investigate why virtual worlds feel so immersive, how attention can be pulled away from people and responsibilities, why idealized digital identities can be so appealing, and how real-world relationships help keep us grounded. Each day combines selected chapters from the novella with discussion questions, clear learning goals, a hands-on zero-tech activity and an optional tech-supported challenge.

Activities include building an Immersion Machine, mapping Maddy’s Attention Pie, creating an Escape Ladder, following a Rescue Route to Friendship, constructing a Balance Bridge, and redesigning the fictional DreamWalker with safer, healthier features. Learners are encouraged to think like digital detectives—questioning how technology influences feelings, choices, identity and relationships rather than simply being told that screens are “good” or “bad”.

Designed with busy parents and educators in mind, the pack requires minimal preparation. Lessons can be completed over five days or spread over a longer period to suit your family’s learning rhythm. Activities work for individual learners, siblings, homeschool co-ops and small groups, with adaptations for different learning needs and confidence levels.

By the end of the mini unit, learners will have explored digital wellbeing, screen balance, virtual identity, attention, friendship, empathy and responsible technology design while developing critical-thinking, communication and creative problem-solving skills.

Most importantly, The Web Trap helps young people understand that technology should add to life—not quietly replace the people, experiences and relationships that make real life worth living.

Please note: this Mini Unit Pack includes downloadable selected chapters of the illustrated novella The Web Trap – A Tech Obsession Fairytale.

The full novella is not included in this pack.
