Before Paul Bunyan, before Davy Crockett, before the Wild West, America’s tall tale tradition started in the colonies.

George Washington and the cherry tree. Betsy Ross and the flag. Two of the most famous stories in American culture. Both almost certainly invented.

But that is not really the point. The point is why we invented them and what they tell us about what Americans need to believe about themselves and their history.

A History of America’s Original Tall Tales: Colonial Era Starter Pack is a lean, engaging myth investigation activity that introduces students to the American Myth Investigators framework through two of the most familiar founding stories. Using the Solo Investigator role, students work through three analytical lenses — the Detective, the Psychologist, and the Journalist — on each case file, then record their verdicts and respond to a final reflection question.

It takes 30 to 45 minutes. It works for any grade between 3 and 12. And it teaches a framework for evaluating historical claims that students will use long after the activity is finished.

What is included:

  • Brief teacher note with implementation guidance
  • Student introduction to the Three Psychology Engines of Myth
  • Solo Investigator role card
  • 2 complete Myth Cards: George Washington and the Cherry Tree, and Betsy Ross and the Flag
  • 2-card Verdict Board
  • Final Reflection prompt
  • Call to action connecting to the full Signers’ Sacrifice investigation

Works for:

  • A single class period introduction to historical thinking
  • A preview lesson before purchasing the full investigation
  • Homeschool families who want to try the framework before committing to the full product
  • Any time you need a ready-to-go 30-minute critical thinking activity

Want the full investigation? The Signers’ Sacrifice includes 12 case files, all three investigative roles fully developed, and complete differentiation for grades 3–12. Find it in my shop.
